This subject provides an overview of the molecular, cellular, and structural organization of the nervous system and the signaling function of the neurons in fifteen, brief presentations. It provides a possibility for the teachers to emphasize key points, and for students to raise questions and talk about the basics of neurobiology in an interactive manner.
This subject prepares students for an integrated view of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. This also provides a solid base for later understanding the operation of neurons in-network and the consequence of pathophysiological changes, which will be discussed in the second-semester courses (subjects), such as the “Introduction to functional neurobiology” and “Electrophysiology”.
The review of the structure and function of the nervous system is provided in fifteen seminar-like sessions. In the first part of the seminars, the following topics will be summarized for the students in a PowerPoint presentation-form.
1. Signaling in the Brain
2. Form and Function in Cells of the Brain
3-5. Electrical properties of neurons and neuronal networks
6-8. Intercellular communication
9. Development of the nervous system – Birth & Death of Neurons
10. PNS – CNS
11. Structural and functional organization of Spinal cord
12. Structural and functional organization of Brain stem & Cerebellum
13 Structural and functional organization of Diencephalon
14 Structural and functional organization of Telencephalon
15 Structural and functional organization of Sensory Organs
The second part of the seminars will be sacrificed for interactive discussion of the actual topic. Students complete a short test, and the scores achieved will sum up during the fifteen occasions and characterize the activity of students. Grades will be offered to students based on these points. There will be a written test possibility for those, who would like to improve their grades.
